“Representative Steve King, Republican of Iowa, even rationalized Stack’s crime. “It’s sad the incident in Texas happened,” he said, “but by the same token, it’s an agency that is unnecessary. And when the day comes when that is over and we abolish the I.R.S., it’s going to be a happy day for America.””
Cooper said that Nassour was specifically targeted that evening because he’d seen video, sent to his Web site by a reader, which showed the officer forcing his drug dog to false alert on a vehicle, thereby giving probable cause for a search.
Crouched behind bushes near the car wash, Barry had his camera leveled at the officer. The goal was to catch Nassour on video stealing the money, then pick a time later on to confront the officer with a camera crew, ambush-news style.
“If in fact police have implicit biases—if they automatically associate blacks with crime—then that would be relevant to an officer in a split-second, shoot-or-don’t-shoot situation,” said Lorie Fridell, a criminology professor at the University of South Florida who is creating a new anti-bias police training program with funding from the Justice Department. “Is the officer more inclined to believe he sees a gun in the hand of a black person, rather than a cell phone? I think that is possible.”—
“Why of course the people don’t want war … But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship … Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”— Hermann Goering, Nazi leader.
“All outward forms of religion are almost useless, and are the causes of endless strife… . Believe there is a great power silently working all things for good, behave yourself and never mind the rest.”— Beatrix Potter
Dude, dude, dude, I know! I actually have a story - ABOUT YOU! So I was reading my dash and you were on it and I clicked over to your page for some reason or another and it had the little “follow” button up top. WTF! Why is it asking if I want to follow you when in the other tab I have open there you are on my dash! So … I refollowed you? I was worried I unfollowed you by following you until this showed up so now I’m not so worried. OR am I?
This happens to me, too. It will say “follow” and then it says “Join Tumblr” instead of “Dashboard.”
We have this contractor who occasionally does work for us. Every single time he gives us an estimate, he comes back later saying how this or that came up or changed and now it will actually cost $xxx more.
I know he needs the work and he’s a nice guy, apart from his bad business skills. So, I’ve used him for three projects in all. I know how he rolls now, so I was very upfront about needing a good estimate that we could stick to.
Well, he did it again today. What was going to be about $800 ($200 in supplies, $600 in labor) will now be $1600 ($800 in supplies, $800 in labor).
We’re about to have a kid and I spoke at length with him before starting the project that $800 was our budget and we needed to stay there. Was he sure that would be the cost? Etc, etc. I even got estimates from two more folks. One was $750 and the other was $800.
So, I told him we’d pay for the increase in supplies, but that was it.
…tens of thousands of books in the Perry Branch library will be shelved by topic, similar to the way bookstores arrange books. The demise of the century-old Dewey Decimal system is overdue, county librarians say: It’s just too confusing for people to hunt down books using those long strings of numbers and letters.
